Who We Are
Taken from Barry Amateur Radio Association (BARA) first Constitution of 1955……..
“We, the undersigned, being desirous to secure for ourselves the pleasures and benefits of the association of persons commonly interested in Amateur Radio, by furthering better cooperation among its members, develop individual efficiency, furthering the interest of radio in the general community, do hereby constitute ourselves the BARRY AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION and do enact this constitution as our governing law.”
The Barry Amateur Radio Association (BARA) was started in 1955.
By 1974 there was lots of membership activity and enthusiasm. The group had its own repeater and was a growing association. ARES was active but informal.
By 1984, the club had experienced loss of members through silent keys (death of members), relocation, and medical problems making some unable to participate actively. The repeater council lost the coordination for the repeater and had no new coordination frequency as a replacement. The annual picnic and Christmas party were discontinued due to lack of interest and organization. At this time BARA was disbanded as a formal club.
Despite the loss of the club’s formal status, many members and new hams continued to meet monthly for breakfast. Many hams also continued to participate annually in Field Day.
In 2001 the club began to take momemtum again. All Barry county amateurs were contacted and the first picnic and swap in many years was held in August 2001. In October 2001 BARA participated in its first “Jamboree-on-the-Air” (JOTA). JOTA is a boy and girl scouting activity in which scouts are given the opportunity to make voice contacts with other scouts or talk with “hams” across the country.
In 2002 BARA approached Charlton Park in Barry county for a potential swap-meet and Field Day. The park welcomed Field Day as an educational event and helped with the organization and advertising for 2002.
In the fall of 2002 BARA again became an active amateur radio club. It held officer elections and became ARRL affiliated.
